Can YOU guess the correct # of Skulls in THIS jar ?

October is upon us and the best holidays will soon be here. This months challenge is anything Halloween. Pumpkins, black cats, candy corn, dress up, masks, spiders etc. How do you celebrate All Hallows' Eve ? I hope to see a few paintings with bright Orange and Yellow in them . Remember what you paint is as important as how you paint. I will also allow 2 paintings from any artist this month because there is a second challenge for this October. The second challenge is scarey and only the bravest artist will dare attempt it. The second painting must have a Halloween theme as well but you must paint it without using a paintbrush. This can be done in a variety of ways like painting directly from the tube, using a knife, fork, spoon, q-tips, cardboard... whatever.
This month is special because we have a giveaway. Anyone can participate in the giveaway by leaving a comment on this post- (kids too) found on the top right of this page, just be sure to leave an email address as a POC if you do not have a blog. The person who can correctly guess (or comes closest) will win something crafty made by Calypso Moon Artist Alice Thompson. In the event of a tie... you both win something crafty. If you participate in the painting challenge(s) YOU get to guess twice.
Painting Submissions due by October 3o 7pm eastern time.
Deadline for the giveaway in the comments section is October 31st 7pm East Coast time. Winner(s) will be announced at 9pm October 31st eastern time.

Alice,

The Halloween blog makeover, the skull contest, and the challenge are creepy and scary and shivery and shuddery and fun!

A count of craniums will be transmitted henceforth.

Beware the dark mansion on Crow's Nest Street
Tarry not long to Trick or Treat
For a pink spider climbs the wall
And a calico bunny hops down the hall
Fish of gold swim through thin air
Whilst a Sorceress sits with dark, long hair.

In her hand she wields wands of magic
Tipped with fur of critters tragic
By her be cauldrons three
Filled with colored glue
The hues of which will frighten thee
Gurgling blood red, bubbling toad yellow, frothing newt blue.

Around her jar of shrunken heads
Curls a cat all spooky and black
Ignoring the dancing of viridian mice
Taunting 131 skulls to be precise.

Take care fair lass, brave laddie, as down you venture Crow's Nest Street
Lest to that jar you wish to contribute anatomy parts you prefer to keep
Beware the dark mansion on Crow's Nest Street
Tarry not long to Trick or Treat.

On a dark and windless night,
the children wander with a light,
shone on the ground to light their way
all with laughing games they play.

The night grows cold,
the moon grows old,
the children shiver in their gowns,
wings, tiaras and silver crowns

For up ahead they see with fright
a pair of dancing green balls so bright,
wandering down the lane,
should they return the way they came?

No noise it makes this verde ghost,
the children who can no longer boast
but worry and quiver and cry
"Oh my oh my!"

Standing still they wait to see
what will happen, what can it be?
There's movement up ahead,
and with a flurry of final dread

The green orbs approach low and lean
scary, sinister, and mean
until one child shouts, "Look at that!
It's just my silly old tomcat!"

But you never know on a scary night,
when something feels just not quite right,
for all is fair on Hallow's Eve
if only you are brave enough to believe.

-Great theme Alice. I guess 132 skulls though I came up with that number before reading Dabblerteer's guess. But I did borrow the idea for a poem! Boo!

I guess 113 and 162. Alice said I got to guess twice because I goofed earlier. Isn't she nice?

I love this painting. It says Haloween to me in my child's heart. The most disgustingly sweet candy that you can only get in October. YES! Can't wait to try a painting for this quite wonderful blog.

I love everyone's submissions this year! Maybe it's the cooler weather or the beautiful colors of fall, but it seems like everyone's paintings are so happy and easygoing. Not easy work, mind you, but somehow unloaded.

Thanks, Alice, for your kind words on my blog. I enjoy writing, and painting, very, very much.

I surely hope Calypso Moon Artist Movement lasts a long time. I have given up other challenges as my time is tight, but yours I look forward to tremendously. It's always a surprise!

My seconds guess is 180 skulls.

We witches are very busy these days, getting our best attire ready for our Sunday night party. But I have consulted my crystal ball and yes, I see a number. My second guess is 128.

Now off on my broom to find the flying monkeys. Drat, where did Dorothy go to now. I need those ruby slippers!

"Counting on Treats"

The painting I did was duly submitted,

Another skull count Alice quickly suggested.

So, I multiplied the jar's thickness by the coefficient of glass,

For the jar's lid, I subtracted its mass.

For each noggin visible, I calculated the volume,

And divided the ether with digits gone quantum.

For my second result, I crunched numbers galore,

The quantity derived was 124.
